.....more about Pi Pad......

about

Pi Pad is designed as a bold top level insertion into a rowhouse context along the light-rail and Albert Park reserve in leafy St Kilda West. Designed to sit comfortably with its neighbours in terms of scale, balancing the additional new second level with appropriate form and bold material. This new upper level is designed to seamlessly and recessively read from the streetscape, establishing the existing front façade as the dominant reading of the scale of the existing dwelling. The new level is set back from the front façade and features a simple yet bold oversailing eaves to east and west which provides façade articulation and sunscreening for south-west summer sun. The deeper oversailing roof to the north-east, with the warmth and materiality of different privacy-screens of timber casting different patterns of shadow, provides articulation, shelter and a private oasis on the roof-top deck with city views.

sustainability

A key intention of the design was to explore the rural shed typology, including raking roof and soaring eaves, active and passive solar design with a. 5.55kW solar array, capturing rainwater and rain gardens, utilising low embodied energy and longevity of materials, and clever skylights to provide transformative spatial and design quality.
