Our Work
With over five decades of combined experience as industry leaders, we are professionals who care deeply about our craft. Whether it’s the design of a home with spaces and moments of joy and living, or beautiful public spaces of dining, community, working, or higher-density living , we have the skills and experience. We work in a unique way, collaborating with each client to produce a body of work that is a reflection of the relationship between architect, client and place, of making meaning and memory, and of sustainability. We create a unique and timeless architecture of both sculptural form, interior space, and the skin that unites them. We are design holistic, and our artistic intention extends to furniture design, selections and bespoke design commissions.
What We Do
Together with a multi-disciplinary team we create architecture and interior design that is approachable, beautiful and memorable. Kate and Rob believe passionately in good design. They are awarded for their work, and hold sessional positions teaching design to Masters students at the University of Melbourne. Whatever is required for your project, Kate and Rob maintain a hands-on approach on each and every project to ensure that you have access to their unique creativity and design philosophy to create your own unique projects. They approach design differently - no two are the same, yet their sculptural approach to form, space and place is evident above all.
About Us
mcmahon and nerlich established full-time in 2013 with a focus on finely crafted residential and commercial projects. Directors Rob Nerlich and Kate McMahon weave together influences from built environment, architectural urbanism and design theory perspectives. We think differently about design, and are recognised for our design excellence.
How We Work
Our multi-disciplinary studio brings our unique vision to each project. We work across all scales with expertise in residential, education, commercial and urban design across metropolitan and regional areas. We remain passionate about designing houses for people. Each project we undertake contributes to our practice research and our focus on design-led architecture that is sustainable and a portrait of our clients. We hold studio leader positions at the Melbourne School of Design at the University of Melbourne. We have a published award-winning portfolio of built work across the residential and commercial sectors and we have a strong and clear practice / process philosophy and social sustainability ethic.
